Yesterday, a Recap:
Jun. 2nd, 2002 02:56 pmMy goodness, yesterday was a full day.
I got up a little late yesterday, checked LJ, and learned about
cheshire's car accident. George and I talked about it and decided that after lunch we should check on him and see if he wanted some company.
We went to lunch at Souper Salad, and had a very pleasant lunch sitting outside at one of their big umbrella tables. We were talking about how nice the day was, and I suggested that they come over to our place and we could all go swimming in the pool.
So they did! They went back to their house and got their swimsuits and came back to go swimming with us. We had a good time in the pool. The only mildly annoying part was the group of children. I'm all for kids having fun at the pool on a hot summer day. If there was only one pool, I wouldn't have held it against them, because they had every right to be there. But we have an indoor pool too.

Since I couldn't really swim because of all the jumping and splashing and stuff, we decided to go to the indoor lap pool, which is in the adjacent building. So we go in, and are really enjoying the pool, when all the kids come in and jump into the lap pool, and make it completely impossible to actually do any laps (which I had been doing). But since the kids were out of the other pool, we decided to go back out there. Well, you guessed it. We'd only been outside a few minutes when the kids came and jumped back in the outdoor pool. So after a bit, we went back to the lap pool. I actually got a few laps in this time. But when the kids came back they brought their balls, and were taking turns running and jumping into the (3 feet deep!) pool, completely ignoring whether they were going to land practically on top of us. They were getting dangerous, and we decided to leave. At this point I was really irritated, not because they were having fun in the pool, but because they didn't have enough consideration to stay in one pool when it was obvious that we were trying to swim in which ever pool the weren't using. The parent's didn't have any inclination to say anything to the kids about it either. So I was irritated. I said to Verna in a very loud tone that we were going to have to move again. The girl, who was about 12 was sitting on the stairs mostly blocking the way out of the pool. I was so mad that I splashed her full in the face as I was getting out. I didn't make eye contact or say anything to her, just threw a hand full of water in her face. I know I shouldn't have done it, but I knew it wouldn't hurt anything, and it seemed like a good way of communicating my anger at her. I think it had the desired effect. The kids didn't come back out of the lap pool while we were there. I was swimming laps in the outdoor pool and every time I went by the door to the lap pool she would come out and glare at me, but they didn't follow us back outside.
There was another group of children outside, but they were much younger. The one about 5 years old wanted to jump in, and his mom said ok, just to make sure he didn't jump when he was going to splash me. He was always very careful to wait till I had gone past to jump into the pool. I gotta respect a 5 year old who can be polite enough to wait to make his big splash until it won't disturb anyone else. I wanted to hug the mom for having the sense to teach her child some manners.

We had a really good time at the pool, despite the rude kids. It started thundering, and we decided to head back. About half way to the apartment, it started sprinkling rain. We got home and were drying off when it started pouring massive amounts of rain, and huge lightning and thunder were coming rapidly. Then I noticed that one of my plants had fallen off the porch rail and was down on the ground. I decided to run out and get it, thinking, I'm already wet, how bad could it be. Well, let me tell you, I got soaked. I wasn't that wet when I was in the swimming pool. My plant was pretty badly damaged, and I haven't yet gone to try to fix it.
So, partly because they didn't really want to drive home in the rain anyway, the Masons decided to stay and watch Harry Potter, which they hadn't seen yet. I slept through part of it, but managed to watch most.
Then, around 8.30 they left, and we finally had a chance to catch up with
cheshire to see how he was doing. We ended up going over to his place and hanging out until 4.30 am.
gorski and Shawn came over too. I was wearing my Stokes Navier t-shirt, and Gorski, George and I spent a long time trying to work it out. I think we did a pretty good job of at least decyphering all they symbols. We went and got some sodas and snacks at the store, and stayed up playing a very amusing game all night. Much fun was had by all. I hope we helped Ryan take his mind off the very unpleasant events of the day. I think we did.
Monday we're gong to go pick Ryan up and take him to get a rental car, among other things.
